A.W.O.L All Walks of Life was started in 1997 by Tony A. Jordan along with a small group of friends. The name A.W.O.L. stands for “All Walks of Life,” which reinforces A.W.O.L’s commitment to diversity. The organizations basic concept stemmed from one individuals love for the art of performance poetry and rap. During an A.W.O.L. session in one of the Savannah State University campus rooms, the group was informed that they could not utilize the room because they were not a registered campus organization. This was the birth of Savannah State University’s first Poetry and Hip-Hop based organization. A.W.O.L. shows became popular campus attractions and before long students from surrounding colleges begin attending along with the Savannah community as well. In September of 2004 A.W.O.L was formally incorporated as a 501( c ) 3 non-profit organization and became A.W.O.L All Walks of Life, Inc. A.W.O.L Inc.’s birth was influenced by the need of young African-American students to be heard and respected as artist. “Spoken Word” as it is often referred to now, has a devout following in the local area, with A.W.O.L Inc. at the helm. AWOL Inc.’s mission was and still is to promote and provide self-awareness through poetry, hip-hop and life.
