ABOUT THE WORK

Tomorrow is Boris’ birthday party. And all of Boris’ friends have been invited. There will be birthday cake and fizzy drinks and lots of red balloons. Best of all, Boris is looking forward to celebrating with his friends. But the party has started…and there’s NO sign of the party bus or ANY of Boris’ friends. What if no one drops by?!!!

“Boris and the Birthday Party” is a collection of watercolor drawings that focuses on adorable characters with big personalities. This work is about celebrating the creative act of play and imagination, encouraging viewers of all ages to take a moment and see the world through their inner world of whimsy to tell a story close to their own hearts. Anything is possible. So hop on the birthday bus, and enjoy the art for what it is: a world of joy, wonder and whimsy.

BIO

A visual storyteller and illustrator from Maryland, Derek Larson now lives in Savannah, GA, where he works as a full-time studio artist. Larson journeyed to the South for a SCAD sequential art M.F.A. in 2010 and never left.Larson became a full-time studio artist in 2020, selling his ceramic mushrooms, gnomes, and whimsical characters in small boutiques across the country. 

After three years hand-making distinctively fantastical sculptures, Larson packed up his home ceramics studio in Summer 2023 and pivoted back to his graduate degree training in illustration and storytelling. 

Today, Larson is illustrating lush watercolor landscapes and buildings (with whimsical characters making their rightful appearances) and working on a series of children's picture books.
